Pairing: Miroku/Sango

Based upon: Manga chapter 536, The Kazaana's Limit
Slowly but surely, I'm growing in confidence about my ability to write Mir/San.
Like most of the other ideas I've had about this pairing, this one came after going through the end of the manga. I was actually working towards another idea I've still got brewing (that may, one day, become coherent enough to write) and this just rather came out of nowhere.
I'm really rather proud of this piece :) It's divergent from the canon, and I think my experiment with the characterizations was successful. I'm beginning to understand them a bit better, what makes them tick, what motivates their behavior. I thought it would be interesting to attempt to turn the old cliche on its head - "I'm saving you from me, it's for your own good" - and definitely a challenge, within 250 words!
One of the things I disliked most about the end of the manga and the final battle with Naraku was the whole Sango-sacrificing-Rin-for-Miroku idea. It goes back to her original introduction to the story - the idea that she'd betray her friends or allies for "personal" reasons - but the whole "All me to sacrifice!" / "no me!" / "no me!" back-and-forth was beyond played out. Plus, as I replied to the original comments on this entry, I really wanted one of them to tell the other to shut up about the whole martyr complex and get on with the business of killing Naraku. If they were going to die, might as well do it together and go down in a blaze of glory!
Too many times Sango's character is misjudged, and she's turned into some sort of weepy emo angsty weakling, contrary to her canon character. She's strong, able, and a capable warrior. She's shown before that she's willing to fight for what she believes in and/or cares about. I don't think Miroku would be any different. I wish, instead of them being separated as they were in Naraku's body, that she'd followed him and defended him, showing him that she hadn't given up hope, no matter that she'd seen his true and terrible fate if the kazaana swallowed him whole.
And so, that's what I wrote :) I think the ending line is one of my better ones, too, managing to wrap it all up rather succinctly.
Maybe one day I'll have the confidence to attempt something on a bit of a grander scale with these two, but in the meanwhile, it's nice to have a chance to challenge myself and stretch my pairing chops!

:-D This was much better.

But I definitely like this piece better than the first one I wrote (which, while also an award winner somehow, is too close to canon for my personal taste), but hey, we all gotta start somewhere!
I liked the chance to bring out Sango's strong side, even if it was from Miroku's point of view. Maybe that even made it better, being on the brink of death and she of all people is the one to save him...
*must stop before ideas consume exhausted brain*

Actually, I thought that it being from Miroku's POV made it that much better... that "light at the end of the tunnel" thing, I think it was more touching :-D

*looks both ways* I can't promise anything when it comes to tempting bunnies... this Mir/Kag fic I'm writing for you has mutated so many times I could cry. And I have to beat the angst-bunnies off with a cattle prod! Which, of course, means they're chewing on my slippers... encouraging me to write more Mir/Kag angsty fics -_-;;

Honestly, its been trial and error for me, so I greatly sympathize :)

LOL, don't be in any hurry to finish/post the Mir/Kag fun'n'flirty fic! I can certainly handle waiting for it, though I already know it will be good :)
Plus, you know, I still have two requests of my own to fulfill. Talk about sweatdropping...I fear what will happen if the smutty fluffy muse gets wind of the Sess/older Rin request!!
And LOL @ the image of beating bunnies off with a cattle prod...you have been lured down the path of alt pairings, there's no turning back now! Mwahaha *darkside*
and now its time for bed as I've lost all coherency

Like I told you, I liked your divergence. They went on together. I did a divergence of inukaiden where Miroku opens the wind tunnel when Sango asks Miroku to take her with him.
In the manga Sango is willing to do anything to save Miroku. Naraku is gaining strength from their despair. If she can kill Naraku and save Miroku she is willing to do it even it means killing Rin. She is lucky that Kohaku saved Rin, if Rin had died Sesshoumaru would have killed her and Naraku would have achieved his goal and gotten more power.
Naraku was willing to let them live forever in the Jewel so long as they felt despair and powered him up.
I thought your characterizations in this piece were very good.

I realize that, and thus understand the need for the arc, but at the same time, after almost 500 chapters of the same old, same old it gets a bit tired. I'd have much preferred if they could've found some way to work over their terror and despair and come together to fight Naraku, denying him the depth of negative feelings he needed in order to enhance the jewel's power.
I thought your characterizations in this piece were very good.
Thanks! Brevity worked in my favor, methinks :D
