dokuga_contest Drabble #29 | Rock
Well, I really thought I was going to miss this deadline - and then, inspiration struck!
I think its rather sad that this is the only LJ community I'm faithful to, of late - but I guess its for a good reason: I'm more focused on finishing my "big fics", pieces written outside the weekly contest community context. I'm still enjoying the various communities I'm a part of - I try to vote at the very least, even if the prompt is uninspiring - but finally, my muses are munching on the big projects.
This is one such project, LOL.
"The Wrong Ending" was a drabble I wrote on a whim for the tenth drabble contest at this comm, one that had quite a few people asking if there would ever be more (much to my shock and pleasant surprise). The muses had an epic!brainstorm over it, but I made them shove it off until I'd finished Memento Mori. Thus, it was out of sight - but obviously, not out of mind.
The scene written for this prompt (#29) is from near the end of the story, right before the final 'arc', so to speak. This was not an easy piece to write; far from it. I had to figure out some way to work in the premise of the entire epic story, and convey the importance of this particular scene, all in 200 words. I actually thought I'd come up short (heh, that never happens...) and thus, started off rather lushly, before having to edit out nearly all of the environment-building in order to squeeze in the last two lines. Hopefully it still makes sense, but let me set the scene for you: they are on a river bank, just around the bend from ending their quest. Kagome is sitting down, watching the reflection of the sunset on the water, while Sesshoumaru is standing in profile, face to the wind, trying to ascertain their location and/or if its a good place to stop for the evening.
Hence the use of the prompt word as a verb - rocking back to study him thoughtfully as she contemplates just what this moment in time means.
One of the inspirations for this piece was the song "Chasing Cars" (video) by Snow Patrol. I feel it really sets the scene well, and these lyrics struck the same chord of emotion I was attempting to convey:
I don't quite know / how to say / how I feel
Those three words / are said too much / they're not enough
Right now, the arcs of this story are very loosely tied together; I have no idea when I'll get a chance to get to them and do them the justice they truly deserve, but the pieces fit thusly:
"The Wrong Ending" - literally, the beginning. The only difference is that Inuyasha and the others aren't dead, but missing, their whereabouts unknown.
"Indulgence" - a scene from the middle, after Sesshoumaru & Kagome have reluctantly agreed to journey together on their somewhat mutual quest.
"Searching for Answers" - near the end; by this point, their opinions of each other have evolved quite a bit and will most certainly influence the actual ending of the story.
I feel like I'm really giving everything away now that I've written this piece and submitted it to the contest :P Usually I like to hold my cards close to my chest and certainly, this story will have more twists and turns than just this outline presented in three separate, short scenes. So, consider this trilogy like an advanced preview, LOL. I have other fics to finish before I can really devote the time and effort to this one that it deserves, but I haven't forgotten about it :)

Now, I realize that you haven't actually posted your fic here, but the link to your contest entry is essentially the same thing. I'm going to ask you lock down this post until Thursday afternoon when the winners are announced.
