IYFG: 2nd Quarter 2009 Recommendations
Here's the list of recommendations I sent through the IYFG list. Since they're just as likely to ignore it as anything else, I thought I'd also share it here at LJ. I had no idea I followed so many WIPs, LOL!
I also have a static rec list, which is more like an all-time squee-a-thon favorites list :P so feel free to click there and see the sorts of things I gravitate to the most.
But for things eligible for this quarter at the Guild...
Title: My Sanctuary
Author: Langus
Rating: Y
Type: Romance
Pairing(s): Sesshoumaru/Kagome
Status: Oneshot; complete (*Not eligible this quarter, originally posted in March)
Summary: In the breaking dawn, a royal couple shares a quiet moment of contemplation
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5119836/1/
Why I'm recommending this piece: It's a special sort of author indeed who can convey such intimacy and emotion without the use of dialogue. The descriptions are lush, languid, and natural.
Title: Pride, Before the Fall
Author: Langus
Rating: T
Type: Drama/Angst
Pairing(s): Sesshoumaru/Kagome
Status: Serial; complete
Summary: When a heart feels betrayed and the lines of communication break down, is there any reason to hope that love can still conquer all? A Sess/Kag serial based on entries submitted to the Dokuga Contest LJ group's weekly drabble challenge.
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5040541/1/
Why I'm recommending this piece: A very innovative experiment, as the author writes the story backwards, supplying the reader with the missing pieces of the puzzle and a knot of dread, as they see the outcome of the characters' actions. Recently completed and very satisfying, definitely not your typical schmoopy S/K happy-ending - you may need a Kleenex for the last installment!
Title: Outmatched
Author: piratequeen0405
Rating: Y
Type: Comedy/Drama/Romance
Pairing(s): Sesshoumaru/Kagome
Status: Serial, WIP
Summary: Kagome has a crush on her best friend's brother. Sesshoumaru thinks dating a human might be diverting...for a short time. He may have met his match.
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4796678/1/
Why I'm recommending this piece: The best sort of serials are the kind that aren't planned, and this is that sort of fic. Written on the basis of contest prompts at an LJ community, the story's twists and turns are delightful and all-too-realistic. This is one of the FEW Sess/Kag stories that doesn't immediately turn Inuyasha (or SessMom, for that matter) into a psychotic maniac, which is always refreshing. Wonderful, believable characterizations all around, as per usual with this author :)
Title: An Unlikely Pairing
Author: paws_bells (new to the Guild, I believe)
Rating: T
Type: Comedy/Crossover with Final Fantasy
Pairing(s): Sesshoumaru + Kagome
Status: Oneshot, complete
Summary: In which the disgruntled villain is being rescued by the lively, spirited heroine. Unfortunately for her, he is no Prince Charming. Unfortunately for him, she is a mouthy wench who just would not shut up.
URL: http://community.livejournal.com/ebony_silks/223031.html
Why I'm recommending this piece: Cracky humor at its best. Sesshoumaru is tricked into attending an anime convention as Sephiroth, and it goes about as well as one would expect. A little meta humor as well, for fans of Final Fantasy, or just for those who've attended conventions before and seen fangirls at their fangirlly best, LOL.
Title: Memories of You
Author: kmoaton
Rating: X
Type: Adventure/Drama/Romance
Pairing(s): Inuyasha/Kagome, Miroku/Sango
Status: Multichapter WIP
Summary: A wish was made and Kagome went home with no memories of the past. How are things changed when a new threat forces Inuyasha to help Kagome regain her memories, including the love they had for each other?
URL: http://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_st.php/154845
Why I'm recommending this piece: A strikingly original idea for a continuation of the series. What if Kagome had died upon receiving the intact Shikon jewel after Naraku's death? What if that had been part of Midoriko's ultimate plan all along? This is the author's first published story, so the beginning is a bit rough, but if you are the type that loves a gripping read, this is the piece for you.
Title: Wait
Author: kmoaton
Rating: K+
Type: Vignette
Pairing(s): Inuyasha/Kagome
Status: Short-short; complete
Summary: He had waited 500 years for her to return. He would wait as long as it took for her to come back to him.
URL: http://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_ch.php/161713/568211#fic_c
Why I'm recommending this piece: A 'short version', if you will, of Memories of You. Wonderful introspection and characterization for Inuyasha, as he bides his time before he can be reunited with Kagome. A lot of emotion packed into a very tiny piece.
Title: In the Rain
Author: kmoaton
Rating: T
Type: Introspection
Pairing(s): Sango + Miroku
Status: Short-short; complete
Summary: Sango takes a good, hard look at herself - and her life - during a rainstorm.
URL: http://community.livejournal.com/mirsanficart/30759.html
Why I'm recommending this piece: One of the best examples of good characterization for Sango that I've ever seen. Beautiful imagery connects her pain and tears with the falling rain. This is a chapter in the Absolution serial, but it stands alone exquisitely.
Title: Riders on the Storm
Author: landofthekwt
Rating: Y
Type: Comedy
Pairing(s): Miroku/Sango
Status: Short-short; complete
Summary: Slayer spikes Miroku’s love life.
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4692940/20/
Why I'm recommending this piece: You have not seen a Mir/San love story quite like this - the ultimate crack!fic, as our couple is transformed into a Harley-riding, leather-jacket-wearing, cringeworthy-line-spouting biker couple. Not meant to be taken seriously, but all in good fun nonetheless, LOL.
Title: Rokujou
Author: yumi_michiyo
Rating: Y
Type: Angst/Drama/Romance
Pairing(s): Miroku/Sango
Status: Serial, complete
Summary: All he ever wanted to do was to make her happy; it was the only thing a cursed monk like himself had to offer. A short story told with six different emotions.
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4978054/1/
Why I'm recommending this piece: A lovely little series exploring the development of feelings between Miroku & Sango in the canon setting. When Miroku sees Sango suffering, he makes the ultimate sacrifice - for her, for him, for them. Saying much more would give away the ending, but make sure you have a tissue or two handy nonetheless! The author writes beautifully no matter what the situation.
Title: Concealed
Author: yumi_michiyo
Rating: T
Type: Vignette
Pairing(s): None; ensemble piece
Status: Short-short; complete
Summary: It would be better for all if some secrets couldn't be kept.
URL: http://community.livejournal.com/iy_themes/8225.html
Why I'm recommending this piece: Lovely and quite en pointe explorations of the four main characters and their secrets, and why they hide what they hide.
Title: Seasons of the Heart
Author: Milareppa (new to the Guild)
Rating: K+
Type: Vignette
Pairing(s): Single-character introspection (Bokuseno)
Status: Short-short; complete
Summary: "I once made a promise: three branches for three sheaths..."
URL: http://community.livejournal.com/iy_themes/4058.html
Why I'm recommending this piece: An unusual and refreshing piece of the canon story, from a very minor character's point of view. It reads as a more 'literary' piece than your standard fare, but brings a fresh perspective to a very complicated character.
Title: Control. Infirmity. Defiance.
Author: psyco_chick32
Rating: X
Type: Adventure/Drama/Romance
Pairing(s): Inuyasha/Kagome, Miroku/Sango
Status: Multichapter WIP
Summary: Control: Losing it, gaining it, finding one’s self in the process. Infirmity: Discovering one’s weakness and turning it into a strength. Defiance: Refusing to give in, even when destiny itself is one’s enemy. When one detail of the timeline is altered, everyone must deal with the consequences.
URL: http://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_st.php/160408
Why I'm recommending this piece: A quest fic/divergence to really sink your teeth into. What if Kikyo's death had never happened, and she was there to accompany the rest of the Inutachi through the manga story? What is the impact of that one single act on the rest of the characters? The author is rewriting canon to find out, and its been a helluva ride so far. There's even a 'surprise' pairing in store down the line, one that's already been hinted at in the first few chapters.
Title: Eight-Fold Path
Author: psyco_chick32
Rating: Y
Type: Drama
Pairing(s): Miroku/Sango
Status: Serial, WIP
Summary: Miroku and Sango had finally found peace and happiness. Now an innocent piece of a not-so-innocent past has come back to haunt him, and he refuses to back down from his duty. Will he and Sango be able to retain the happiness they so rightfully deserve?
URL: http://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_st.php/160850
Why I'm recommending this piece: Another unpredictable serial, based on contest prompts, this fic explores the murky past of our favorite monk. After working so hard to retain his life - and win the love of Sango - this puts a severe strain on their relationship, one even he might not be ready to face.
Title: Midnight Bath
Author: knittingknots
Rating: Y
Type: Romance
Pairing(s): Inuyasha/Kagome
Status: Short-short; complete
Summary: Post Manga. Who's this taking a bath at night? And is she alone or not? Takes place about 1562 in my story timeline.
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5108935/1/
Why I'm recommending this piece: A beautiful little piece of lush description. If you enjoy sensual imagery that teases but doesn't taunt, then this is the piece for you. Its not necessary to know/understand KK's complete post-manga universe in order to enjoy this piece.
PS I think Hotmail is dead, you guys - I'm not getting any messages, from LJ or otherwise. Anybody else having these issues?
I also have a static rec list, which is more like an all-time squee-a-thon favorites list :P so feel free to click there and see the sorts of things I gravitate to the most.
