Writing meme, part deux

It was inevitable.

Here are the closing lines of the last twenty fics I've written. Because I feel like being contrary, I'm going to pair them up with their openers - let's see what happens!

1. “I’m sorry,” she announced, dry-eyed. | “I know.”

2. Akiko gave a low whistle. | “Well, Sango? Are you coming?”

3. Miroku glanced down the length of his bar, quirking a brow as he polished the surface of the solid wood. | “So what reason would I have to lie?”

4. “You requested an audience with me, my lord?” | “You wanted my protection? Well, now you have it.”

5. Kagome straightened in her seat, demurely pushing herself to the edge of the chair and crossing her feet at an angle behind her. | But maybe…

“I’m glad you accepted the job,” she said impulsively, laying her hand over his as he switched gears.

He looked down at their joined hands, before looking up at her. “Me, too,” he agreed, turning his hand over so that their palms touched.

…we will be soon.

6. Kagome took a deep breath, steeling her spine as she made her way down the dimly lit hallway. | “This was over before it ever began.”

7. She watched him from a distance as he made his way down to the coast. | Another year to love.

8. Kagome stifled a sigh as she eased into the apartment, grateful to finally put her heavy bags down and give her arms a rest. | “It’s good to be home,” she breathed in response, before closing her mouth over his.

9. Sesshoumaru drew a deep breath and steeled his spine as he eyed the thick oak door warily. | “I agree.”

10. Kikyo stood at her kitchen counter, silently chopping vegetables on a plastic cutting board. | The angel of mercy had finally become the angel of death.

11. He stood. He waited. He watched. | Izayoi, he mused, reaching for the misbegotten apple. I have a feeling this is not the last we’ll see of each other.

12. Kagome’s footsteps were silent as she picked her way down the forest path. | She took a deep breath and turned back towards the village, placing one trembling foot in front of the other.

13. Miroku gazed down the length of the inn’s veranda thoughtfully, the gentle tap of the falling rain on the roof above echoing in his ears. | When will you realize, my dear Sango, that you already have my heart?

14. “I’ll take care of everything,” Miroku announced as he and his wife returned to their hut after a long, tiring day on the road. | “Anytime, my love,” he replied softly. “Anytime.”

15. He had lived for countless centuries, and had known many different sorts of women in his time. | She was just her, flaws and all, and somehow, she proved to be the strongest of them all.

16. Kagome heaved a sigh of relief as she threw herself down on the blanket-covered ground. | “Sounds good,” she replied with a smile.

17. Kagome took a deep breath and quietly closed the bathroom door. | Oh, yeah, she thought, pulling away, rejection silently slicing through her.

18. This is how you remind me… | And you’ll never make room in your heart for me.

19. Youkai don’t need to sleep, he’d once informed her. | Maybe not as different as you think, she mused, her eyes closing as the siren call of sleep drifted over her once again.

20. Sesshoumaru sighed, eyeing himself in the bathroom mirror. | “You’ve got this,” he assured himself as he pushed through the double glass doors, not bothering to look back.

...

The 'key' to the stories is here, for those interested.

These are really interesting in that you can't always tell the pairing - even though you know who it probably is. Some are obvious, but some aren't at all.
