IYFG: 4th Quarter 2009...okay, seriously?!

I see what you did there.
Next time you guys decide to break out the sock brigade, try not to make it so freaking obvious. (Here's a hint: voting numbers haven't looked that good since 2008.)

Though I am amused that I seem to have indirectly benefited from your white-knighting this quarter, please leave me and my work out of any future shenanigans. I've had enough wank by association to last me a lifetime from this fandom, and I don't even know who the fuck you guys are. It'd be one thing if you were actually readers of my stories - but I know for a fact I don't have 19 consistent readers (who are also members of the IYFG!) of Fleeting, or 10 people who gave a damn about Dream Lover.
I don't know whether to pity you or envy you that you have the sort of free time that makes something like the IYFG the center of your internet existence, so much so that you're going to infiltrate a Yahoo Group (a Yahoo Group!) with a band of footwear just to make sure you or your friends win quarterly popularity polls. If that is, indeed, the case, then I have just one thing to say to you...

A vast majority of the polls were decided by landslide winners, and I know of at least one poll that shifted in a landslide in the last six hours of voting.
That tells me there is a brigade of sockpuppets who came out to play with the voting this quarter, and I find that incredibly pathetic. Some of those socks apparently voted for my stories, which I do not appreciate (but am amused by nonetheless).
That's what's going on, to the best of my ability to explain it. I watch stats for a living, so I notice sudden shifts like this.

I knew your graphic would come in handy some day... :D

As for the Guild, at least twinkle bitch didn't win her Miroku/Sango award. There's always an upside to things!

But it's not even the fact that my stories won/placed this term that make me call shenanigans. Just take a look at the poll numbers. We've never had so many freaking landslide victories, and we certainly haven't had that many voters in almost two years. That's funky. And pathetic.

I know I've used him once, but because you'll appreciate it and because there can never be TOO MUCH NATHAN:
This was me when I saw the post:

Elsewise there are some seriously sorry people in this fandom with seriously misplaced priorities o.O

A lot of those votes were very close and some were very, very not. I posted a last reminder. About 6 more people voted. Most of the polls did not shift, but a couple did. Fleeting was *always* in first place. Fragments dropped to second in the last couple of days of voting. And the entire songfic category was almost untouched after the initial burst of votes.
I'm unsure as to who you're angry at, but there's no conspiracy here. And looking at the Best of the Year awards, you're quite popular, you know. You figure in *several* of the categories. Perhaps people were going on name recognition. Or you have a lot of lurkers. *shrug*
We don't allow sock puppet accounts, but they're difficult to find/prove. If you know of any, by all means, tell us.

Yes, I watched the polls on and off for most of yesterday, and there were way more than six new votes cast. One poll alone had 12 new votes in the last six or so hours. There were so many landslide victories I had to just shake my head...because really? That doesn't raise someone's rad flag somewhere?
I'm not angry about this - quite the opposite, actually. I've spent most of the weekend laughing and gathering macros for the express purpose of making this post. I just don't appreciate my stories getting caught up in all this mess, because it's patently obvious - by hits, reviews, reader responses, any other metric you can measure "popularity" by - that my work not as popular as the IYFG results make it out to be. This bothered me a lot last quarter, but now I'm rather past the point of caring. I wish I had this sort of free time on my hands, beyond an aberrant afternoon or two. Think of all the writing I could get done!

I don't deny there are sock puppet accounts - and that that's pathetic and stupid - but it's even *more* idiotic considering they didn't really change the results. Just made the spread wider. They could have just let it go naturally. I'm annoyed that anyone is so vapid and self-important as to put so much investment in something that's meant to be for fun.
But... I still think you're underestimating your popularity. You have such a wonderful fanbase, even if it's small. Surely, none of them are sock puppeting you into placing. I'm fairly certain your awards are legit. Now, as for some others'... *sigh* Well, if you have any ideas how to stop the idiocy, feel free to inform me!

Anyway, if it is a sock-puppet conspiracy, it seems like an awfully complicated one to me. Your fans would have had to plan far enough in advance to create their sock-puppets before we closed membership for the quarter (right after the end of nominations) -- and if they were planning that far ahead anyway, why would they have waited until the very last minute to cast their sock-puppet votes? It's not as if they can see the votes as they accrue, so they can't really hold off and use the sock-puppets only if the fic they want to win is behind near the end. You would think someone who would go to all that trouble to influence the vote would have cast all their votes right off the bat, or perhaps sprinkled them throughout if they were concerned with appearances.
I'm with Rosie -- I think it's more likely that a few lurkers were spurred to vote by her reminder, and that you have more fans than you think you do. The fandom is not as big as it used to be, so even if your stats look small to you, they might still be significant in terms of the current fandom population.

It's rather banal, really. The sockpuppets were already in the group before the quarter closed. Anytime you open membership, someone could sign up two or three times with different IDs and you'd be none the wiser. *shrug* Like I said, if the IYFG is so srs fkng bzns to them that they feel they have to do this to influence the outcomes, then more power to them. I can just think of better ways to spend my time.

As for who has access to the polls, unless somebody made a mistake in putting them up (and accidentally allowed everyone to see the results as they happen), the only people who are able to see the results before the polls close are the moderators (not our rule or anything, of course -- it's just an automatic thing that comes with setting someone's account to "moderator" status) -- so in order for the sock-puppets to be acting on inside information, one of the moderators would have to have given it to them. That would be...disappointing, to say the least (*grin*). Maybe I'm just being naive and overly trusting, but I sincerely hope that none of the mods would stoop to pulling strings for themselves or others behind the scenes. That said, if you have a good reason to think somebody in particular is doing that, please let me know -- we may not be able to eliminate all sock-puppets from the group entirely, but a coordinated effort like that is something we could do something about.

*preens*
(yeah sorry I can't help it LOL)
Edit: Because I'm really only here for the macros:

Cause that's all I usually hear (see?) when I go up against the brick wall that is the IYFG...

And you should be proud! It's lovely! :)

You do realize you're stressing yourself out over something really inconsequential, right? :/
It's a banner. A cluster of pixels. Not only that, but it's a cluster of pixels that means fuck all to anybody outside of the Inuyasha fandom. I never understood fanguild wank in 2005 and I don't understand it now.
All of you need to go have a time out on the naughty step.

Actually, I have laughed long and heartily about the whole situation. Indeed, the fact that the same shit is still going on five years later amuses me more than you'll ever know :P
Besides, I so rarely get to use macros on this journal, I just couldn't resist!

Again, I didn't mean to imply the people who voted for my work were sockpuppets. I certainly know some of you actually exist :P Besides, it wasn't my stuff that ultimately benefitted from the ballot box stuffing, so *shrug*
I just have a hard time believing I beat Beside You in Time for anything, legitimately.
