Day 26 - A pairing that you hated and ended up loving?
|
Bruce Patman/Lila Fowler, Sweet Valley ~ this is a pairing that actually didn't happen until SVU, which I never really read (they were "too mature" for me when they and I were of age, LOL), but I remember back in the day that this was a HUGE alt ship that I. just. did. NOT. get. Really?! Really?! The two most spoiled, arrogant, rich kids in the universe, who were hardly worth anything on their own, and people cared about them?! (Obviously I did not understand fandom all that well when I was a tween, LOL.)
But when I went back and read them for the nostalgia, I totally got it, the whole 'forbidden' aspect of it, and the sheer snarky joy that came in the potential pairing of these two in the original and first spin-off series. They certainly got some zingers in on each other at the very least, hinting at a hatred-before-love type deal. And their relationship in SVU was actually quite well rendered, from what I remember of it. This is definitely one of those pairings that benefits from a slow burn (and a little jaded maturity).

I'm glad I'm on 26, though - I'm started to get tired of this meme, and having to post every day, LOL :P

I didn't, either - I mostly read SVH and SVT, never the Kids or SVU or the Elizabeth series. But a few years ago (during a previous nostalgia wave), I read some of the SVU Super Thriller editions or whatever the hell they are, and damn if they weren't good reads. That's where Bruce/Lila existed (I read a couple of books focused on each of them), and it was pretty nifty, considering how escapist and unrealistic the Sweet Valley universe is :P

What is it about that sort of relationship that's just so intriguing? Man, I love those! :D
I only read about 2 of this series. I don't remember why I didn't get into them, only that my childhood best friend was obsessed with them. (That might have been the reason, lol - she talked about it enough that I just didn't want to hear any more.) I was happy with my BSC though. :)

The emotions are already there, even if its the wrong type of passion? IDK, but I think its because there is a connection, albeit a negative one, at first. Considering I am such a sucker for childhood friends-to-lovers type stories, I suppose I'm surprised at how intrigued I am at this particular trope, considering its the exact opposite...

BSC was definitely at the top of my girl series reading list, but I read a lot of Sweet Valley High and Sweet Valley Twins (the first spin-off series). I had a thing for twins, I guess, and I found the Sweet Valley universe very appealing because it was juuuuuuuuuuust bordering on realistic as to make me be able to happily suspend my disbelief, LOL. Plus they had the sagas, which was like the honey to my bee, because I was starting to really get into historical fiction around the time those came out.

Well, maybe because usually the love-hate relationship tends to edge towards mutual understanding before the full-on lovefest? :P I think that people who dislike each other often see a truer picture of how the other really is. *shrugs* Just a theory.

I didn't read SVH to the end (I think I gave them up somewhere around the Death Valley adventures...#115?) so I didn't read the final trilogy of books or any of the Senior Year ones. Olivia made an appearance in SVU, LOL, so in my mind, she's a-okay :P
I never would have imagined these two to finally get together, especially with the fact that they both seemed such bitter rivals throughout the series.
*nods* And yet somehow, that works in SVU. I mean, Lila got married FFS, and then her rich, titled Italian husband died tragically...it was very weird, but it worked, LOL.
