Happy timez = reccing timez

For only the second time since I started posting fanfic on the internet, I've managed to finish a multi-part story before posting it. (The first time was this, and I'm hoping for a similarly positive reaction :) ) I'm very excited, and looking forward to sharing the fruits of my holiday-ficcing labor very soon.

In the meanwhile, I'm going to do my part in spreading the squee with another handful of story recs, because the awesome just keeps coming!

Title: Thanksgiving (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] leithal
Fandom: Baby-sitters Club
Genre: Family
Rating: T
Warning(s): language, innuendo
Pairing: N/A
Word Length: 1,163
URL: http://community.livejournal.com/babysitters100/16224.html
Author's Summary: Around the Thanksgiving dinner table, Mallory's parents make a surprising announcement.

Why I'm recommending this piece: This is a really wonderful piece, told from Mallory's point of view, that deals with a fairly common theme in Pike-centric fic. It has a really nice, homey quality to it, a realistic bridging the gap into the post-canon universe, where Stacey and her mother are still close friends, the Pikes have their own esoteric holiday traditions, and the characters feel like themselves, albeit a few years older. I'm always one to rah-rah Mallory turning out normal after her spell at Riverbend, and this fic really delivers. I loved the composition, the characterization, and the rise and fall of the action, and I'm looking forward to more by this newbie author.

Title: Summer (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] miss_slipslop
Fandom: Baby-sitters Club
Genre: General
Rating: K
Warning(s): N/A
Pairing: N/A
Word Length: 1,469
URL: http://community.livejournal.com/babysitters100/18707.html
Author's Summary: Angry at being excluded by his brothers, Nicky Pike makes a discovery.

Why I'm recommending this piece: A basic retelling of the subplot of The Ghost at Dawn's House from Nicky Pike's point of view, the author really does a fantastic job of spelling out how lonely and miserable Nicky feels, even in the midst of his big family. It has to be hard for Nicky, being the youngest boy with brothers who want nothing to do with him, and being at that awkward age when he wants nothing to do with girls, so its pretty cool that he was the first one to discover the secret passage in Dawn's rambling farmhouse (and its also pretty cool that his parents were wise enough to give him the space he needed to figure things out).

Title: Kitchen (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen
Fandom: Baby-sitters Club
Genre: Friendship/Drama
Rating: T
Warning(s): Character death
Pairing: Richard Spier/Alma Spier, Patrick Thomas/Elizabeth Thomas
Word Length: 6,980
URL: (1) http://community.livejournal.com/babysitters100/20512.html | (2) http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6369978/4/
Author's Summary: One event begins the bonds of a strong friendship between Elizabeth Thomas and Richard Spier.

Why I'm recommending this piece: I absolutely love [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen's take on the parents of the universe, and her ability to bring them into focus in a way that seems natural and unobtrusive. It's long been a fanon rumor that Elizabeth Thomas and Richard Spier are the "real" parents of David Michael Thomas, so any exploration of their friendship is ripe for the picking. I don't think that's where the author is taking this (she says its the first of three interconnected oneshots), but her gentle exploration of not only Elizabeth Thomas, but also of Richard Spier (famously uptight and stuffy, but probably with good reason) and Alma Spier (Mary Anne's long-dead mother and quite the mysterious canon figure) is something to absolutely relish. She lays out a wonderful beginning here, at turns funny and tragic, setting the foundation for what is probably one of the stronger parental friendships in the series, given how close Mary Anne feels to Kristy's mom, especially at the beginning.

Recommendations: Kids Inc
A short note: I'm absolutely ecstatic that someone else is writing KI fic besides myself, and I'm especially willing to overlook some minor stylistic details to get to the core of the story here. None of these fics are flawless, containing some grammatical and formatting problems that would normally put me out, but I think they're worthy reads for the stories they tell, no matter how they're presented =)

Title: Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right
Author: Dawne
Fandom: Kids Inc
Genre: Comedy/Romance
Rating: T
Warning(s): language, innuendo
Pairing: Ryan/Renee
Word Length: ~4,500
URL: http://arisjanetakos.com/dawne/KidsInc/fanfic/twowrongs.html
Author's Summary: N/A

Why I'm recommending this piece: This is the way to voice your displeasure at reigning shipwars - by writing an incredibly hilarious parody yourself! This story hinges on an old cliche - the "middle school gets married and has an egg baby" line so popular with YA series books and sitcoms alike - and pairs up the ultra-competitive Renee and Ryan in order to save both their skins. Of course, as is wont to happen when you start marrying people off, it messes with their personal relationships and threatens to blow completely out of their control, but each character steps up in the end, and it all works out. There's lots of humor to be had, a bit of romance (real and fake), and just enough angst to keep things interesting. Dawne calls it her "anti-Valentine's Day" story, but I think it makes for a pretty good little read on the day devoted to hearts and flowers, LOL!!

Title: Let's Twist Again (2011)
Author: GloriaFan
Fandom: Kids Inc
Genre: Family
Rating: K
Warning(s): N/A
Pairing: N/A (Ryan-centric)
Word Length: 261
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6674787/1/
Author's Summary: Ryan surprises his grandmother with a dance on a normal day.

Why I'm recommending this piece: This is a very sweet little riff on the season two episode "Grandma, Won't You Dance with Me?" It was one of the earliest explorations of Ryan's character, and one of the first times he was given a little depth, which GloriaFan continues in this short piece. I have a soft spot for fics where Ryan indulges his inner nerd, and this is definitely one of them, LOL!

Title: Blessings in Disguise (2011)
Author: GloriaFan
Fandom: Kids Inc
Genre: Family
Rating: K
Warning(s): N/A
Pairing: N/A (Kid-centric)
Word Length: 633
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6686577/1/
Author's Summary: There I sat. Alone. Heartbroken. Crying into my pillow as I heard angry screams from my father, who was fighting with my brother through a payphone.

Why I'm recommending this piece: It seems what GloriaFan excels at best are character-centric pieces, pushing a bit further into the depths of canon than what we see on screen. He does a great job here with the Kid, definitely the most tragic of the early characters, trading on not just the revelations made in the season four episodes "Still Appearing" and "What's in a Name?", but also pulling in bits and pieces from the rarely-aired pilot episode, "The Beginning". It's a neat little way of knitting canon back together, and it works, at least for me =)

As always, you can find my rec lists at the top of my journal.

Have you read any good stories lately? Tell me about them!

And, finally, I spent the better part of the weekend gathering episodes to another childhood favorite show, which is posted in its (almost) entirety to YouTube. Considering my already professed fandoms (Kids Inc, Instant Star), this should come as ABSOLUTELY NO SURPRISE...

I remember Jem.

I loved it, but always felt somewhat bad for the Misfits. They were always so close to winning. I was also kind of confused as to why Jem needed an alter ego. Maybe that would be made clearer if I watched the series again.

While I was really into Jem, my sister actually went as her for Halloween once. She had a crazy sparkle wig and awesome '80s clothes. I would have been jealous, but that was the year I went as She-Ra. I looked AWESOME!

Thanks for the recs! So far I've read (and loved!) "Thanksgiving," and I actually had already read (and loved) "Summer". I'm looking forward to checking out more.

Also, I have to say... I haven't always loved everything in the BSC fandom and kind of stayed away for awhile, so perhaps that's why I wasn't aware of the David Michael paternity rumor. *blinks* Clearly, there was a lot I was missing.
