This little piece came out of nowhere, and at the same time - it didn't.
It's one part reaction to the overload of sweet and fluff that I'd been writing pre-Valentine's Day; that's the longest stretch of time I think I've ever sustained writing/posting such light fic, so the accompanying angst was going to have to show itself somewhere :P
More than that, however, this is directly influenced by the inspiration song:
I've written a lot of IY fic on the back of LP songs, so it was no surprise when I had to investigate Mike Shinoda's sudden hotness (!) that I'd start listening to all of their albums again, including Minutes to Midnight, their 2007 release. This song was never a single from it, but it's long been one of my favorites (and I've written quite a few ficlets from this particular trio of songs at the end of this album). I love the mournful quality of the lyrics and the rise and fall of the music; it was just what I needed to deflate my fluff high.
And, well, I guess Linkin Park reached out and touched the slumbering Sesshoumaru muse, because I was almost immediately flooded with the imagery of this piece. I haven't written for IY contest communities in quite a long time (this was my first entry at
iyissekiwa in over two years, in fact), but sometimes when I'm compiling the newsletter, the prompts strike my interest. I've been wanting to get back to my S/K stories, if only to finish them, but when my Sess muse is dormant, there's not much I can do :-/
Read the lyrics and tell me you don't see him in it:
My insides all turn to ash / so slow
And blew away as I collapsed / so cold
A black wind took them away / from sight
Another darkness over day / that night
And the clouds above move closer
Looking so dissatisfied
But the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing
I used to be my own protection / but not now
Because my path has lost direction / somehow
A black wind took you away / from sight
Another darkness over day / that night
And the clouds above move closer
Looking so dissatisfied
And the ground below grew colder
As they put you down inside
But the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing
So now you're gone / and I was wrong
I never knew what it was like
To be alone...

I also think quite a number of my fics (especially those with angst) were inspired by LP.
Very nice. I also read you drabble and it was fantastic. I loved the mood.

:D Awesome! Its rare to meet a fellow fan ~ most of the people I know think they're lame. Me, I'd listen to Chester sing the fucking phone book, LOL.
Did you see their performance on SNL a couple of weeks ago? (It was on Hulu but it expired :( ) So bizarre. Love their new single...but so bizarre. I'm not used to thinking Shinoda as attractive, LOL.

Every Heart was written on the back of repeated listenings to Hybrid Theory and Meteora. At one point, I actually had plans to write songfics inspired by LP songs. Ah, those were the days...

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a totally unplanned thing, but given Sesshoumaru's general unwillingness to play ball with me over the last year or so, I took the opportunity as soon as I had it, LOL.

Preach it. It's not my fault that a bunch of emo, angsty, annoying teenagers loved their music as much as I did. I've really liked them since their first single and I've kept my eye on them ever since.
And sitting next to Chester on an airplane is one of my weird fandom fantasies. I could just gush about his music and what it's meant to me the whole ride. (I have more people I'd like to sit next to, but he's definitely way up on my list.)

Aww. I missed it. I can't say I watch a lot of SNL lately. :(
There was a point in time where every other lame fic in most of my fandoms had LP lyrics at the beginning, so while I didn't distance myself from the group as a fan, I never was really open that I loved them the way I do. Seriously, I think they're fantastic. Good to run to, great with lyrics, and they have such a fantastic mood.
Love.

I hear you. On my crossover, Dream just closed off to me and I couldn't continue (especially since the last chapter is from his perspective). But something clicks and suddenly you can write them again.
I think LP is awesome for Sesshoumaru. But I think LP is probably good for anybody at certain times of their lives.

LOL!! That would be pretty awesome, but I'd freeze up in that sort of situation. I have a hard time expressing stuff like that to people I don't personally know. (I've tried it with tennis players, who are just about the most down-to-earth athletes you're ever going to meet, and its still hard :P)

:D YouTube to the rescue!! They were on the episode with Dana Carvey, which is why I even watched it in the first place (I *loved* him on SNL). Finding out they were the musical guest was total icing on the cake!
My jaw dropped when I saw Mike Shinoda, because I'd been thinking a lot about my planned Stacy in Bloom sequel, and this is pretty much exactly what I think adult!Ryan would look like. Soooo weird, LOL!!

Yeah...this. For a long stretch there they were the go-to band for angsty emo teens, so it wasn't exactly "cool" to voice your love for them. Me, I liked their earlier, angstier stuff, but I also love how their sound has evolved, and their newer, more artsy projects. I haven't yet heard the entirety of A Thousand Suns, but I'm kind of in love with the idea that they made a concept album in 2011! :P

Exactly! I've had this problem with several WIP projects, posted and unposted alike. I do wish I could write and story and stick it out til the end so I wouldn't have to deal with these problems, LOL!!
