Well, since my next installment of Allegiance is being held up at the contest community, here's another little piece I wrote this past week, in accordance with the second theme at [livejournal.com profile] iy_themes. Since I'm the owner of the comm, my entries are exempt from voting.

I had to cut the piece down in order to fall within the original word limit, so here's something resembling the original version, if you're interested:

Title: Clandestine

Universe: Alternate
Rating: T
Warnings: A bit on the angsty side

Kagome took a deep breath and quietly allowed the bathroom door to slide into its frame behind her. She gazed out across the tiny, darkened room, her heart skidding in her chest as she eyed the bed. A beside lamp provided the only illumination to be had, casting a warm, golden shadow over the unconscious man occupying the space.

This is stupid, she thought, feeling silly, even as her feet remained firmly rooted in place. It’s just Inuyasha. You’ve been travelling with him all summer. It’s hardly the first time you’ve had to share a bed.

Reluctantly, she put one foot in front of the other, wringing her hands as she crossed the short distance to the bed.

Somehow, it was different this time…

Both of them had been invited on this whirlwind trip by their respective best friends, and had spent the better part of the last three months getting to know each other better. Somewhere between dancing at Trevi Fountain in Rome, sharing an umbrella in Vienna, and touring Montmarte in Paris, she had fallen helplessly in love with this gruff yet beautiful man.

Given their evening touring Moulin Rouge and Sacré Cœur, perhaps it was no surprise that Miroku and Sango wanted to be alone – they could hardly keep their hands off each other at dinner! Of course, that left their erstwhile friends to share the other room, instead of their usual arrangement, splitting up by gender.

I’m an adult, Kagome reminded herself as she stared down at her sleeping companion, nestled so snugly in the sheets. His silver hair fanned across the bedding towards her. This is not a big deal.

Then why was she finding it so hard to climb in beside him?

“I don’t mind sleeping on the floor,” he had told her when they came back to the room. “Just wake me up when you’re ready for bed, and I’ll move...”

She bit her lip as she contemplated her course of action. He was still fighting off the cold he’d picked up in the Austrian rain a few days earlier, and she didn’t want him to suffer on the cold floor for her benefit. Of course, she didn’t want to sleep on the hard wooden floor, either…

She gasped when he stirred, turning to face her and cracking open one golden eye. “Oh, you’re back,” he mumbled, shifting around. “Let me just – ”

“No!” she burst out, reaching for his shoulder to stay him. “You don’t have to do that. Besides, you’re still sick.”

He sighed, sinking back gratefully into the pillows. “Thanks,” he murmured, closing his eyes.

She straightened slowly, her eyes falling to the empty space beside him, her heart gaining speed in her chest. How could she not have noticed that the bed was so small before now?

She started when Inuyasha spoke again. “You gonna sleep standing up?”

“N-no,” she replied with a short laugh, fingering the edge of the duvet.

“Then what’s the problem?”

She swallowed convulsively, squeezing her eyes shut. “No problem,” she said softly, pushing the covers back and sliding in beside him while she still had the nerve.

Inuyasha sighed and rolled over, giving her his back. Kagome turned off the bedside lamp and glanced back at him, marveling at the way the moonlight played upon his silver tresses. She bit her lip, finding her resistance crumbling as exhaustion – and the hazy romance of their shared candlelit dinner – crept over her…

… oh, yes, she definitely understood why their friends wished to be alone this night…

…slowly, she reached out and fingered a lock of his hair, her heart skipping a beat as it cascaded through her hand, so thick and soft and warm.

Why can’t I tell him how I feel? she wondered silently, her hand drifting over the smooth plane of his back.

“Kikyo,” he whispered in the dark, pulling the sheets tighter around himself. “I missed you, so much.”

Oh, yeah, she thought, pulling away, rejection silently slicing through her.

This piece was actually inspired by a scene from an episode of the Golden Girls. After Bea Arthur's death, some kind soul linked a YouTube channel in one of the obit threads, where some awesome person has uploaded all seven seasons of the show, uncut. The "GGs" is a very special show for me, and when I was still in the States and this was still showing on Lifetime, I'd watch it every night before going to bed. I've been mainlining it of late, and it just goes to show that you never know where inspiration will come from!!

The scene in question is here, at the eight minute mark. Something about the setup of the scene just struck me, and suddenly this scene popped into my head, of Kagome staring down at a sleeping Inuyasha, hesitant for whatever reason to join him in bed. Over the next day or so, I worked on the justification for that scene :)

There isn't more to this story as of yet, although there obviously could be. I very much like the idea of having a whirlwind summer romance, and how exploring some of this fair continent's finest monuments could contribute to that :) We'll see if anything comes of this, but it was really nice just to have a bit of breather in the midst of all my work. Plus, it helps support a community I started, so its win-win for all!

Nice extension of the original drabble. I too would like to see more to see the story behind Kikyou and what IY sees of his relationship with Kagome.

Kagome can never get out from under the specter of Kikyou... neither can Inuyasha for that matter. I loved the descriptions of his hair and the moonlight, nicely done!

I like the extension of the story. I would love to see more of this. You've raised some very interesting questions.
