Kagome heaved a sigh of relief as she threw herself down on the blanket-covered ground. “Thank goodness that’s over,” she groaned dramatically to Sango, who gave her an indulgent smile and shake of the head in return. Kagome rolled onto her back, stretching out like a lazy cat in the afternoon sun. “Why does finals week have to coincide with the most beautiful weather we’ve had in ages?”
Sango glanced down at her over the top of her sunglasses. “Think of it as nature’s warped sense of humor,” she drawled, before turning her attention back to her phone.
Kagome shrugged, reaching into her bag for her own pair of shades. The girls were sitting on the edge of a park that adjoined the university’s campus, along with most of their fellow classmates. The sun was shining brightly down on them, the breeze warm as it stirred through their hair. It was a perfect late spring afternoon, not to mention the end of finals week.
“How’d you do?” Sango inquired, flipping her phone open as she received another text message.
Kagome groaned again, covering her face with her hands. “All I can say is, thank God it was the microeconomics of business – a class I could pass in my sleep!” She paused, peeking between her fingers to ascertain whether her friend was paying attention. Sango gazed down at her with a wry smile, as if she knew what was coming next. “Which I might as well have been doing, considering my mind has been otherwise occupied lately…”
Sango gave her friend’s hand a sympathetic squeeze. “Kagome – ”
“I know, I know,” Kagome interrupted, pushing her sunglasses up the slope of her nose. “If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen again, in its own time. I guess…I guess I just wish I knew if it was meant to be…”
She bit her lip to keep an unexpected wave of tears at bay. Pull yourself together, girl, she reprimanded herself. It’s not so bad as that, and you know it. You’re just exhausted from exams, that’s all.
Still…
It was hard, being so close and yet so far from the one she loved – sharing an apartment and a somewhat tenuous friendship with him, when she wanted – no, needed – so much more. The breadth and depth of her love for Sesshoumaru continued to grow, almost daily, fueled by fleeting moments in his presence: sharing a quick cup of tea in the morning, bumping into each other in hallway, studying in the common room while he quietly read his newspaper. She often found herself gazing at him, her heart longing for him as it always had, her body aching for the touch it had once known.
Maintaining a friendship with him was the only thing that pulled her from the depths of her despair following their bitter breakup. Ironic, perhaps, but she’d have it no other way. More than anything, she wanted him to be happy, and if that meant settling for a platonic friendship, then so be it. She would not push – after all, the last time she’d forced him to show his hand, she had been ill-prepared for the consequences of her actions.
She couldn’t stop herself from wishing, however. A little piece of her would always hold out hope that they would find their way back to each other. After all, if it was meant to be…
“So, that was your last exam, right?” Sango chirped, cutting into her friend’s heavy thoughts.
“Mmm,” Kagome mumbled, closing her eyes and positioning herself for optimal sun exposure. She’d love nothing more than to dream the afternoon away, maybe pick up where she left off that morning – a sensual summery getaway with the object of her affection to someplace terribly romantic, holding hands in the park, kissing in the rain, making love by the fire – from which she had been so rudely awakened by her alarm clock.
“Good,” Sango replied, her fingers flying over the keypad of her phone. She made a noise of satisfaction a few moments later, which caused Kagome to crack open an eye.
She regarded her friend warily. “Why did you ask?”
Sango waved her hand dismissively as she typed out a response. “I just wanted to be sure,” she hedged, hitting the send button with a flourish and glancing up, as if searching for someone.
A small knot began to form in Kagome’s stomach as she sat up. “Sango? What’s going on?”
Sango lifted her chin in reply, drawing Kagome’s gaze across the small park. Her heart plummeted to the lower reaches of her stomach when she realized Miroku and Inuyasha were approaching them, albeit somewhat reluctantly.
“Sango!” Kagome hissed, pulling off her shades. “I told you, I don’t want to see him!”
Sango gave her a pleading look. “Please, Kagome, just talk to him, okay? It’s been hell on earth trying to keep him at bay these last few weeks.” She paused, glancing down into her lap. “Besides, I think it would do you both a world of good to get this out in the open and settled, once and for all.”
“But Sango, after what he did to me, how can you – ”
Sango clapped her hand on Kagome’s arm. “Please?” she asked quietly. “You’re both my friends, and I hate seeing you in such pain. If you won’t do it for your own peace of mind, will you do it for mine?”
Before she could respond, Miroku and Inuyasha arrived at their blanket. Sango scrambled to her feet, pressing a kiss to her boyfriend’s cheek and taking his arm. “I’ll trade you,” she offered with a smile.
“Hmm, I’ll take you up on that,” Miroku replied coyly, giving his companion a little push forward while at the same time returning his girlfriend’s kiss.
Kagome quickly turned away from the sweet scene, shoving her sunglasses back over her eyes. She had no desire to see Inuyasha, for sure, but it was also hard to see another couple being so openly affectionate. Some wounds were still too raw.
“We’re going for lunch,” Sango announced, reaching for her bag. “You two stay and have a nice chat, okay?”
Kagome shot her a murderous look, mercifully hidden behind the tinted shades, as the pair strolled off, Miroku’s arm hooked loosely around Sango’s waist.
Inuyasha sat down on the blanket, not far from Kagome. She tacitly ignored him, staring out over the expanse of the park, her heart thudding heavily in her chest. She wasn’t sure what she felt – a mix of emotions, anger and sorrow and panic. She hadn’t spoken to him since unexpectedly waking up in his bed over a month ago.
“So are you ever going to talk to me again?” Inuyasha finally asked.
Kagome glanced at him. He was sitting quite stiffly, his arms wrapped around his knees, his gaze focused on the middle distance, also shielded from hers by sunglasses. The set of his shoulders and the thin line of his mouth betrayed the nervousness and insecurity he hid under the gruff tone of his voice.
“Should I?” she replied quietly.
He turned to face her then, peeling his sunglasses from his face. His eyes were intense as they met hers, a silent, affirmative plea.
Butterflies began to gather in her stomach as she looked back at him. God, but she hated confrontation. “I know what you did. I know who you are.”
He furrowed his brow, his expression puzzled. “What are you talking about?”
Kagome’s hands curled into fists at her sides. “I know you’re Sesshoumaru’s brother,” she spat with an exasperated sigh. “I know you were only using me in some twisted game to get back at him.”
Before she could place him, Inuyasha shot across the small space that separated them, his mouth meeting hers with hunger and urgency as his arms closed around her waist. Kagome found herself melting into his embrace under the heat of his kiss. “Are you so sure about that?” he whispered as he pulled away, one of his hands rising up to caress her neck.
Kagome’s head was swimming as she drew her breath. “Inuyasha,” she managed, her tone pleading, “stop playing games with me.”
He kissed her again, gently this time, his lips moving softly over hers. “I’m not playing,” he murmured. “I want you.”
She pushed him away. “Why? To spite Sesshoumaru? I saw the email you sent him after we slept together.”
His gaze smoldered. “I’ve always wanted you, Kagome. From the first moment I laid eyes on you, last year. Everything I’ve done since is because of that – no other reason.”
“Does that include dumping me with all the others after that Halloween party?” she asked warily, resisting another caress.
He looked hurt as his hand fell away from its intended destination. “I told you, I was called away from school last November,” he replied.
“Don’t lie to me,” she said sharply. “I know all about you. Sesshoumaru showed me your files.”
“I’ve never lied to you, Kagome,” he argued, his brows knitting together. “I don’t know what Sesshoumaru showed you, but he’s too paranoid for his own good sometimes. My interest in you has absolutely nothing to do with him.”
Kagome gave him a disbelieving look. “And threatening to kick his ass on numerous occasions was what, a joke?”
Her heart stopped at the searing gaze he sent back. “I was only trying to protect you,” he replied, the hint of a growl edging into his voice. “He’s been nothing but a monumental jackass to me in what few dealings I’ve had with him, and I didn’t want you to be hurt by him as well.” He took her hand in his. “I care too much for you to let that happen.”
“Inuyasha…” Kagome found herself at a loss for words. He sounded so sincere – how badly she wanted to believe him! Her gut told her he wasn’t evil incarnate, and even if his reasons didn’t necessarily justify his actions, she had little doubt that he cared for her as much as he said he did.
“You’re the first good person I’ve met since…” He paused, swallowing convulsively as he traced the lines of her fingers. “…since I’ve moved here. You’ve made coming here, and living here, a pleasurable experience, when it had been nothing but a nightmare since my mother’s death.”
Oh, God, she thought, her heart flooding with sympathy for him as the details of his past emerged from the haze of her memory – she knew he had only recently come to this country after growing up under his mother’s care in France, and that it had been quite the battle to separate him from his maternal grandparents upon her death. No doubt he had fought tooth and nail the idea of coming to live with the man who had abandoned him for most of his life, which just made her all the more curious about his relationship with his father. She already knew of Sesshoumaru’s shaky connection to their father – was it possible that Inuyasha somehow fared even worse?
Or was this all some sort of elaborate story he was conjuring to garner her sympathy and trust once more? After all, he had played a decisive role in destroying her relationship with his brother, and he had relished it – well, what she could remember of it. A blush rose to her cheeks as she recalled that drunken night.
So what do I do now? she asked herself, gazing down at their joined hands. Can I trust that he’s telling me the truth this time? Or am I nothing but a pawn in some twisted game of his?
“I don’t want to lose you,” he said softly, lacing his fingers through hers.
She glanced up, only to find his face mere inches from hers. “Inuyasha,” she said, pulling away, “I’m not ready to be in a relationship with someone else right now.”
A look of understanding dawned across his features. “So you have given it some thought, what I asked you last time we were together,” he murmured. He allowed her hand to slip out of his. “I’m not going to force you, Kagome. If friendship is all you can offer me…well, then, that’s all I can ask of you. Please, can we be friends again?”
Kagome’s heart skipped a beat as she looked him directly in the eye, seeing nothing but a sincere plea lurking in his gaze. He was hurt, yes, feeling the sting of her rejection of a romantic relationship, but she found no malice there.
Still, she couldn’t help but feel suspicious. “Will you stop using me to antagonize your brother?” she hedged.
“Kagome – ” he started, before squeezing his eyes shut and taking a deep breath. “Of course. For you, I’d do anything.”
She eyed him for another long moment. “Okay,” she finally relented. “We can be friends again.”
Inuyasha’s expression melted into a relieved smile. “Great,” he said. “I’m so glad to hear that.”
Kagome gave him a small smile in return. “As am I,” she admitted. “You were the closest thing I had to a best friend for the last few months.”
Inuyasha quirked a brow, his expression stilling. “And then?”
Kagome grinned. “And then I met Sango,” she replied with a laugh.
He rolled his eyes. “I see how it is,” he teased. “One wrong move, and I’m out in the cold.”
You have no idea, Kagome thought as she gathered her things and stuffed them in her bag. Don’t think I’ll ever be so naïve and stupid when it comes to our friendship again.
“How about we grab some lunch?” Inuyasha asked, breaking into her wary thoughts. “My treat?”
Kagome stood, picking up Sango’s blanket and shaking it out. “Sounds good,” she replied with a smile.

*blink blink*
She did what?
*stares at screen again*
Let's see if I've got this straight. Kagome is in love with Sesshoumaru, but was having doubts about his feelings. Inuyasha was feeding those doubts. Because he's in love with her and wants her for himself. And they slept together.
*blinks again*
Now THAT is different. I give you three internets for originality. Way to set up some sympathetic angsting for Inuyasha. ^_^ (Got to say, I'm wondering about this Kagome just a bit. What a party girl! LOL!) This was most definitely an intriguing chapter.

Yes, that's the rough gist of it. Of course, it makes much more sense in the context of the previous two entries - Distress & Broken. Might help explain some of the o.O on the part of Kagome, including her actions in this scene.
Way to set up some sympathetic angsting for Inuyasha. ^_^
We'll see. Most people are ready to throw him under the bus. I tried to be very careful with his dialogue, because his motives still aren't clear at this point (or at least, I hope they aren't! :P)
This was most definitely an intriguing chapter.
I'm glad you enjoyed this! I wasn't sure what the reaction would be, since there's no actual S/K interaction in this installment.

*clutches InuYasha*
NOOOOO I WILL NEVER SEND HIM UNDER THE BUS!

-_-;;
:( Poor Yasha, beaten up by most of the S/Kers. It's sad how much character abuse he (well, and the rest of the characters, depending on preferred ships) goes through.

Awwww! I'm glad I could prove helpful! *glomps* And it was Inu/Kag interaction even!
I think this was really important - for Kagome to come to terms with everything that has happened, she needed to figure things out with InuYasha.
However! *points* Still, she couldn’t help but feel suspicious. “Will you stop using me to antagonize your brother?” she hedged.
“Kagome – ” he started, before squeezing his eyes shut and taking a deep breath. “Of course. For you, I’d do anything.”
DING DING DING he never actually denied that he was using her to antagonize Sesshoumaru... just said he wouldn't.
*sniffles* I still hold out hope that he was lonely. And sure, maybe he was prodding Sesshoumaru amusedly (a "one-up" if you will), but I think his intentions were pure. You're not one to slaughter his character for sake of story.
*snuggles*
This made my day.

Yayz! I'm happy I could turn around your sucky week. You asked so nicely after this story yesterday that I couldn't help but reindulge myself in it and pick at the ideas again.
Awwww! I'm glad I could prove helpful! *glomps* And it was Inu/Kag interaction even!
LOL, I figured you'd be one of the few to truly appreciate this chapter on the face of things :P The entire scene came to me all at once when I woke up this morning, and I actually had to write down the dialogue before doing anything else so I wouldn't forget the scene. But as I was working on it, I was just thinking, "OMG she's going to squee herself to death over this installment!"
And you did help, because shortly after our conversation about this yesterday a piece of dialogue popped into my head for the other prompt I was considering - and I realized this scene needed to come first in order for the next one to really make sense. Let's just say, it has quite a bit to do with what Inuyasha's saying here ;)
I think this was really important - for Kagome to come to terms with everything that has happened, she needed to figure things out with InuYasha.
Indeed. It is part of the recovery process to confront her demons. I'm just glad Sango approached the situation in the right way, even though it was driving her insane, being caught in the middle of them.
Did you see my update to the mega-meta resource thread? I think some of this is addressed there. You're very perceptive with what he is and isn't saying here ~ you definitely keep me on my toes with the dialogue, that's for sure!
More of Inuyasha's intentions will be revealed in the next few chapters, methinks, though his motives might not be clear until the very end of the story. I quite like this little path the muses have forged for this piece.
*snuggles*
This made my day.
Yay! =) And your reaction totally made mine, LOL.
<-- Icon, Meet Fleeting ^_~
Awwww! *hugs*
LOL, I figured you'd be one of the few to truly appreciate this chapter on the face of things :P
ROFL! You know me too well ^_~
"OMG she's going to squee herself to death over this installment!"
Oh I so did, too. Hell, if anything, I haven't stumbled upon a good Inu + Kag friendship fic in a while, so I'm holding out hope on this one ;)

I hadn't had a chance until now, but I grinned when I read that! *taps head* Now I'm listening to the music and angsting over what the next chapter could be (and hoping I'm right!)

*grins* I try! You're so fabulous with word choice and nuances that I constantly find myself delving deeper into what the characters are saying... both at face-value and at what they're not saying.
And your reaction totally made mine, LOL.
*grins* Always glad to provide a return-smile or two!

LOL!! That's pretty bad, when I'm fulfilling friendship fic wants :P (Of course, I still owe you just exactly that, don't I? *facepalm* Too many projects!)

:D I actually heard the T.I. song on a whim while making lunch today, and looked up the lyrics - and realized just how *perfect* it was.
I have plans for the Staind song. Big plans, yes indeed. It can be interpreted in *so* many different ways *rubs hands together gleefully*

You have no idea how much I usually angst over dialogue for this piece - so for it all to come out nearly perfect on the first try was no small feat. It really helps that I've already got part of the next installment written in my head - it gave me a good direction for this piece.
I'm glad you're enjoying digging into the characters and looking beyond the surface, as that's what I've been trying to accomplish with this whole fic, from the outset. It's been a lot of fun for me to explore, and just icing on the awesome cake that others find it half as interesting as I do :P
*grins* Always glad to provide a return-smile or two!
Part of the reason I love this fic is because of the reader response to it. You guys never disappoint, and sometimes provide guidance in unexpected ways!

Nuuuuu it's absolutely AWESOME. ^_^

Is okay, I still owe you that Mir/Kag fic. Which is thisclose to being done... it just feels like there's something missing and it's KILLING ME.
Edit To Add: LOLOLOL Do you know I *just* wandered over to the prompt table and saw that you did the "need another fic like a hole in the head" comment? I totally didn't mean to copy you on that, ROFL
I'm gonna go with "great minds think alike" *nodsnods*

It's my favorite song by that band, and it was in very heavy rotation a few years ago, when I had the chance to finally meet the man I'd love to marry one day. I rediscovered it during the music meme yesterday and oh man, the fandom ideas, they are a'flowing. Not just for this story, but others.
Somewhere buried on this journal I have a post of songs and ideas meant to accompany them. Maybe its time to revisit that line of thinking...
This is probably the first chapter I've written for this fic that goes equally well with both inspiration songs. Neat.
Nuuuuu it's absolutely AWESOME. ^_^
Aw, well thanks. I'm glad you appreciated it even though it kinda goes directly against your ship :P

Well, I can be flexible against my ship for like...
well, You.
LOL! I was trying to think of others but it's hard to find people who ship alt pairs that aren't like "ZOMG INUYASHA'S A JERK" or "LET'S KILL KAGOME BRUTALLY ISN'T THIS FUN?!" or something equally frustrating and headdesk-worthy.
I once stumbled upon a S/K fic where InuYasha had never been born.
Which on one hand is clever. On the other hand... THE SHOW IS NAMED FOR HIM WTF. It's kind of like writing a fic for "Heroes" where everybody is a normal person, ya know? I'm sure it could work in theory but...
Obviously I also have a very steep learning curve, LOL :P
ROFL! The InuYasha in my head sympathizes ^_~

I know exactly what you mean. Believe me.
You'd probably enjoy this series - its the only other one I can think of off the top of my head that pits Inuyasha in a good light, right from the start.

I suppose that author gets points for not going the usual evil/insane/abusive route but yes, at some point you have to wonder when you're still writing fanfiction, you know? (And I'm very much aware the same question can be asked of my own fic.)

I'm... actually reading it now, and really enjoying it -_-;;

I wouldn't ask that of your fic, because you tend to still acknowledge the other characters, ya know? This was one of those AUs where each character had totally different backgrounds, totally different characterizations... it was so *not* a fanfiction, it was an original piece with characters that looked similar.

Well, to me the whole point of fanfiction is to keep the characters, yanno, in character, but I am often asking myself if I'm stretching their limits beyond the suspension of disbelief, especially when I go AU like I have here.
It's annoying, though, to see an original fic dressed up as a fanfic just to garner more attention. Be proud of your original fic and post it for what it is, you know? The fanfiction world is so warped in so many different ways, LOL - I don't have the first clue why people think its a good springboard for aspiring professional writers :P

*nods* I've been doing a LOT of that lately (I guess it doesn't help that I took away Kagome's "happy" in CID and kind of made her more "irritable" in Ride On!...) but I'm a big fan of character development...
But *raises palm* I solemnly swear that if I ever feel you're stretching their limits (and you know how picky I can be *nodsnods*) I will quickly go "WAIT!" cuz I'm kinda loud and obnoxious like that *nodsnods*

I think Kagome's one of the more malleable characters in canon here, so her characterization can handle more variation than some of the others. But, YMMV of course.
no subject
*nodsnods* I agree. There's a lot that can happen to her - at the beginning, she's very "innocent" but that can change given the right stimulus.

Yeah, I'm still not too sure about Inuyasha. I mean, I can see how he can be both good and bad for Kagome. The thing that irks me though...she claims she loves Sesshoumaru, but allows Inuyasha to just kiss her like that? I mean, I know she's a hot-blooded female and all, but damn. After everything that has happened between them, that's sorta leading him on. Not to mention, what if Sesshoumaru were to see them doing that?!
Sure, she didn't know they were brothers when she slept with him, but she DOES know now!
Argh, I'm getting too caught up in this! LOL. Signs of a truly awesome story!

I was happy to have the time to write one! =) I <3 this story so hard.
Yeah, I'm still not too sure about Inuyasha.
Good ;)

Hmm, interesting. I didn't see it in that light, but I do understand your point. For me, there's still very much the open thread that was left hanging between them two chapters ago. Even though he's been staying away from her, thanks to Sango's threats, Inuyasha still sees her as his last lover and thus, a primo romantic candidate. I meant to give the impression that he pretty much jumped her here, giving her no choice but to accept at least the first kiss. I didn't mean to cast doubt on her feelings for Sesshoumaru by the way she reacted to it. There's still some level of attraction between them, or else she wouldn't have felt so guilty about sleeping with him, methinks. It was also meant to serve as a slight study in contrasts, in that she's being denied affection from the one she wants and yet showered with it from the one she doesn't want.
Sure, she didn't know they were brothers when she slept with him, but she DOES know now!
And that's why she made it clear that she doesn't want to be anything more than his friend - and possibly doesn't trust him as far as she can throw him at this point.
Unfortunately, I fear this piece will make much more sense in the context of the next one, as I wrote it with a specific direction in mind.
Argh, I'm getting too caught up in this! LOL. Signs of a truly awesome story!
Well I, for one, am very happy to get your feedback! Lots of food for thought, no doubt. And thanks, I'm so glad you're enjoying the story as a whole =)

I totally got that :) I guess I was just expecting her to put up more of a fight since she's head over heels for Sesshoumaru. But that's what makes this such an intriguing story, the characterizations are not the norm. I dunno, I guess if it were me (which it's clearly not, lol) I wouldn't have been so forgiving to Inuyasha. I would have pushed his ass away!
Ahhh Luxken, you have talent, truly. I look forward to each and every update :D

Indeed, so I'm seeing :P It makes me wonder what nerve I've struck with so many different people for them to have the same, almost visceral reaction to what transpired here.

Well, thanks =) I'm trying to keep it intriguing and keep everyone on their toes!! Hopefully the next chapter won't take a month to get out :X

not out in the open and she is right to be wary of him. He did have to admit that he saw her as more than just a friend. Now he is forced at least publicly to be just a friend (Sango now best friend) and agreed not to use her to get back at Sesshoumaru. Very enjoyable.Cannot wait to see where this is going.

Well, he is French in this universe, LOL.
Very enjoyable.Cannot wait to see where this is going.
Thanks! I hope you find the rest of the fic just as enjoyable - this was definitely an integral and bridging chapter.

I thought the reluctant promise was cute; at least he didn't deny his motives there. Somehow, though, I feel their father plays a bigger role in the antogonizing than either brother realizes. I wonder sometimes does Inuyasha even understand his feelings for Kagome. I mean, he cares for her but I just wonder if he is using her to get the affection he's not getting from the family.
You have no idea, Kagome thought as she gathered her things and stuffed them in her bag. Don’t think I’ll ever be so naïve and stupid when it comes to our friendship again.
At the same time,I appreciate the fact that Kagome did learn something from the whole experience. This one statement shows that she won't just believe words and hopefully she'll have sense enough to check things out for herself; everyone else in this story does!
Now I'm off the set up my online class.

While she is exploring her feelings for Sesshomaru, she has to acknowledge something drew her to Inuyasha too.
*Exactly.* This chapter sorta bridges the gap between the last chapter and the next one, but we see the evolution of Kagome's feelings not only for the brother she prefers, but for the other as well. There's something quite telling in the fact that she 'hid' behind Sango for three weeks, refusing to have it out with Inuyasha. I think this was a cathartic moment for them both.
I mean, he cares for her but I just wonder if he is using her to get the affection he's not getting from the family.
A very interesting point! Not one I had in mind, but definitely something that might be weaved into the next chapters, as Inuyasha's character is explored a bit more. The challenge is the fact that none of the chapters are from his perspective, so we just have two unreliable narrators interacting with him.

I think a lot of people missed this. I wanted to make it clear that she wasn't just accepting him at face value, but maybe it was too subtle for the masses.
I love having such thoughtful commentators following this piece =) You guys rock my socks.

No, my concern is with how people reacted to *Kagome* here.
