Fleeting: The mega-meta resource post

First of all, a bit of necessary squeeage:

Statistics ahoy! )

Anyone who’s been reading this journal for some length of time will realize how much I <3 the metawriting. Author’s notes abound here – hell, that is the entire point of the exercise, to share the ideas behind the ideas, how I came to certain conclusions, what my motivations were for writing this character in that situation, and why I think it does (or doesn’t) work.

So you can imagine, in an undertaking so massive as this one – a simple thirty prompt challenge table that somehow morphed into an incredibly complex, multi-layered intrigue-laden serialized fic, that I’ve been absolutely dying, trying to keep all the meta inside. Just look at the lengths I go to for single drabbles, and you’ll have some understanding of my struggles, LOL.

But, it was a tradeoff – the suspense and drama that keep the readers coming back for more (more than one person has referred to this fic as their crack, LOL) would be completely and totally spoiled if I laid my thoughts bare after completing and posting each chapter. My favorite part of writing notes – dissecting the characters – would absolutely ruin the reading experience, as half the fun with this fic is trying to figure out who’s the most reliable narrator, what some of the characters’ motivations truly are, and if certain relationships can ever be repaired.

So, this won’t be one of my usual “here are my thoughts on yaoi” author’s notes posts. To do that would absolutely ruin both the readers’ enjoyment of the story, as well as my motivation for writing it. I truly enjoy the feedback I receive after posting each chapter, here and on the archives, as it really helps me see things through the eyes of my readers and helps shape the story in many sometimes surprising ways. You guys keep me on my toes, LOL, always trying to stay one step (or twist!) ahead.

But I’d still like the other part of writing author’s notes – keeping a log of references and personal motivations – for this piece. Thus, I’ve decided to compromise: have a little something for me, and let you guys in on some of the “inside stuff” of this story.

Points of interest… )

As the story progresses, I’ll be adding more bits and pieces to this post.

The Big Date has finally arrived, and boy ~ is it a doozy! Weighing in at an incredible 14,575 words, it is by far the longest chapter I've ever written for a fic - but every single detail was vital, not only in exploring this much anticipated event in the main characters' relationship, but because it also launches all of the second-half storylines - as well as laying the foundation for the sequel.

Notes for Chapter 22 )

Thank you, so much, to everyone who's stuck by me with this fic. I apologize profusely for the length of time its taken me to publish this, but I really wanted to take my time and get it right. The consequences of the actions that occur in this chapter will reverberate through the rest of the story, including some very immediate ones coming up in the next chapter!

Author's Notes: Year in Review

Today marks my official fandom anniversary, as close as I can tell. I’m not sure exactly when I first dipped my toes into the fanfic/fanart pool (I watched the Inuyasha anime and read the manga up to date sometime during the summer, then started searching out fanart, which lead to fanfic, which lead to Christmas ’07 as a Tales from the House of the Moon timesink, which lead to even more reading of ‘major fandom works’), but I do know that on March 11, 2008 I signed up for an account at Media Miner and posted the first three chapters of Every Heart, with no small amount of trepidation.

The rest, as they say, is history…

But what are your thoughts on yaoi?

Probably the biggest thing that happened this year was that I branched out in a big way from my “original” fandom, and it’s probably not a surprise why I did that. My third year in fandom started quite the way 2010 started in general: with tragedy.

And, since I enjoy making traditions out of things, I'd like to revive a little metawriting meme, since metawriting is what I'm all about on this journal, LOL :P

[+] Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track. Well aren't I a regular Chatty Cathy o.O

Apparently, I like to talk. A lot. )

Besides writing, I was able to indulge my cooking-impaired side...but luckily, AB writes literally failproof recipes. Enjoy granola bars? Why not try making your own? These are amazing! <3

I finished my next chapter of Stacy in Bloom, much to my relief. The next one in line is going to be pretty heavy, so here's hoping the muses will stop dancing amongst all the fun stuff they have planned far in the future and give me something good to work with *crosses fingers*

And HOT DAMN, I'M DONE WITH THIS MEME! Man, 30 days is a long friggin' time to be answering questions about pairing preferences...and of course it ends with a doozy o.O

ETA: Got a tiny fandom/rare pairing you wanna pimp and/or request? Post it here! =)

But what are your thoughts on yaoi?

This was a year defined by the good, the bad, and the ugly. No longer a n00b, not quite a BNF (or the writer of BNF(ic)s), but stuck somewhere in between. It wasn’t a perfect year – I’m the first to admit I’ve made some mistakes – but on the whole, I’d say I’m pretty pleased with it. Sometimes you have to be hurt to know your own strength, and goodness knows I went through my share of wank through the greater part of ’09.

The good - finding my niche, making friends, working on a fandom opus )

The bad - life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans )

The ugly - in which I find just what my big mouth gets me...turns out, not much )

Because good things come to those who wait...

It's somewhat gratifying that I'm still hitting milestones relatively "late in the game," so to speak.

Cheers, brilliant...and thanks =) I've never asked for reviews on this (or any other) fic, but somehow - word of mouth, insane curiosity, happenstance searching - I've met that magical three-digit number. It only took 24 chapters, 80K+ words, and nearly two years to do it...

How fitting it was one of my regular reader/reviewers who submitted it. I think that makes it even better, at least for me =)

I can has fanart!

It is done! <3

[livejournal.com profile] aamalie has finalized her beautiful piece of fanart for Midnight Masquerade, and I honestly couldn't be more thrilled. This has been a rough couple of weeks for me, and it seems like I always received an update of some sort about this at just the right moment. Tears of sadness became tears of happiness upon seeing this, and I honestly can't thank her enough :) This is the first piece of fanart I've ever received for my work, and it's a special sort of feeling - of amazement and flattery and humility - that just can't be touched any other way. Thank you, so much!

She has also posted a couple other pieces, so head on over to her deviantArt account and give her some love!!

Mad love to my faithful readers

It's been a very long, very tough week on my end - I'm only now getting around to updating my various archives to note my haul from the IYFG this quarter (which, for the record, I'm still going O.O at). On a whim, I decided to check my stats at FF.net, and lookit what awaited me!

The inner statistician is only pissed she missed it )

I love you guys :)

10,000 Maniacs

This is going to sound incredibly pathetic, but ever since I noticed a fairly big milestone creeping up for my very first published fic, I've been watching it like a hawk, hoping to catch that magical moment. Today, on a whim, I clicked over to Media Miner and *gasp* actually caught it!

I *never* get that lucky. Ever )

There are still a few sekrit goals I hope to accomplish with the fics still currently in progress, but for now, I shall enjoy this little moment for what it's worth :)

First things first: this marks the 50th drabble or oneshot I've written for a contest community here at LJ. That's a rather exciting milestone, if I do say so myself :)

This piece actually grew out of a much, much darker one. The fact that it has a happy ending at all is pretty amazing, considering the original idea I had in mind...

Yay! Another milestone crossed

I know, I know, I think we can all safely agree that number of reviews does not correspond to quality of fic. I'm aware that I'm also very vocal about my enjoyment of having consistent reviewers for a piece (or pieces...) as opposed to a ton of "update soon plz!" random, drive-by reviews. That being said, however, doesn't mean I didn't perk up when I realized one of my pieces (a collection, actually), had reached a milestone:
